Set as a prequel, the game introduces players to a new central character whose journey begins as their idyllic village falls to ruins. This narrative framework leads players on an engaging quest against three villains that embody the themes of power, wealth, and fame, which, although somewhat generic, offers a mix of dark and hopeful storytelling that is resonating well with fans. The gameplay experience is notably enriched, allowing players to control eight characters in battle rather than the previous four. This shift adds a strategic layer to combat, where players can maneuver their front and back lines to exploit enemy weaknesses. Character customizations remain robust, especially with over 30 different characters to recruit and interact with, although the individual character development might feel lackluster compared to expectations. However, the addition of a town-building mechanic stands out, giving a sense of purpose as players create homes, farms, and other structures that enhance the RPG experience.
