Comedy Editorial Review
**** "House Calls" is a charming romantic comedy from the late 1970s, showcasing the brilliant performances of Walter Matthau and Glenda Jackson. The film tells the story of Dr. Charles Nichols, played by Matthau, a recently widowed physician who finds himself navigating the tricky waters of dating after loss. As he explores various relationships, he meets Ann Atkson, portrayed by Jackson, a recent divorcee. Their immediate connection leads to a trial relationship that unfolds with a mix of humor and heart. Critics and audiences appreciate the film for its refreshing portrayal of mature characters in romance, something that is often overlooked in Hollywood. Matthau’s character, with his signature charming gruffness, and Jackson's portrayal of a quirky yet independent woman, deliver a delightful performance that balances wry humor with sweet moments. The supporting cast, including notable performances by Art Carney and Richard Benjamin, enriches the narrative, adding layers to the light-hearted plot. While the film may not be filled with laugh-out-loud moments, its charming script and the capable hands of seasoned actors provide a soothing watch. Many viewers find value in its subtle humor and the relatable impersonations of middle-aged love, making "House Calls" a well-received piece for date nights or family viewings, despite its predictable plotline. Overall, "House Calls" serves as a testament to the idea that love and comedy can thrive at any age—an uplifting portrayal that resonates with both nostalgic viewers and new audiences alike. **
