I bought this for my sons birthday, he received it 3 days after I ordered, it and picked it up from his P.O. box during lunch, at which time he tried to play it. He enjoyed the gift and is considering taking a class to learn how to play it. Great gift, we are of Scottish ancestry and it all turned out perfect. Thank you !

I want to begin by saying that if you want a really good set of bagpipes, buy Henderson or RG Hardie. I prefer the latter. Those are the best. They also cost at least a grand. Heck, you could spend 2,000 bucks on a set of Highland Great Pipes (HGP's) and not get all the bells and whistles you could.rnrnThese were a little under 200 bucks. What do you expect to get for 200 bucks? A decent set of three drone reeds costs about 75 dollars, and a professional-grade chanter reed can run up to $25. Answer; don't expect to get good reeds at all. Also don't expect African Blackwood or other trees really good pipes are made of. Don't expect a beautiful, perfect fit and finish. Expect about a fifth of the quality you would get for a $1,200 set of Henderson pipes, okay?rnrnNow, I'm not going to bash these bagpipes. The reviewers saying that they don't play at all, or that these are decorative only, or that it's expensive firewood either got a bad set (Q.C. on these might be all over the place), or they're beginners to piping who don't know how to set up HGP's. If you're a beginner, and you're reading this review to ponder whether or not to purchase these, this review is geared mainly toward you. Yeah, you can play these, if you know what you're doing. It's like a cheap guitar or a dollar store harmonica, okay? You can make it sound alright if you practice, and you'll either decided piping ain't for you, or you'll love it, and buy a good set.rnrnThe reeds suck. Period. I mean, toss them and buy a set of Ezeedrone or Selbie reeds. The ones you get...there's no word in English, Spanish, Chinese, Welsh or Twi'lek for how cheap these things are. Buy a set or two of good drone reeds, and a couple good chanter reeds. If you don't know how to adjust reeds, experiment on a bunch of cheap ones first, or get a pro to do it, please. Trust me, you do NOT want to ruin an expensive reed with sandpaper, then hang your head in shame that some anonymous person on the internet was right after all. *hangs head* I don't discuss that incident...rnrnThe bag is...mostly airtight. I took some electrical tape to all the points where the stocks attach. Old piper's trick, and it works *wink*. Expect a little air leakage from the drones until you do what I told you to do and replace them with real reeds. Then...yeah...expect it to leak a little. A few days in, and I haven't found the source yet. The thing is, I will...and I will remedy it. A bag needs to be airtight. So airtight you can cork all of the holes, blow it up, and it'll be a nice air pillow for a couple of minutes. If it ain't, you'd better have lungs that harness the power of a Cat 5 hurricane.rnrnThe drones, chanter and stocks on this pipe are made from...something something wood. I dunno. Maybe rosewood? Don't look like it. Definitely not blackwood, bog oak, or anything like that. Everything is laquered black. Not the best finish, and you can see little legs from where the finish ran if you look close enough. The metal fittings actually look good. I got the black velvet bag, and I think the instrument is kinda pretty, honestly. But be careful with the wood. Subpar woods are prone to swelling, shrinking and cracking. The first two affect the sound. The latter sometimes results in a set of bagpipes being angrily thrown out of a third-story window.rnrnSo can you play them? I can most certainly say you can, especially with good reeds in it. Plan on spending an extra hundo on those. If you ordering these, go ahead and order the reeds. Right now. I'll wait. Back? Okay, now as I was saying, you can play these, and they will make music. Good music? Heck yeah, like a 100 dollar guitar or a 3 dollar harmonica, my friend. Just don't play them in the house. I try to, and get yelled at a lot. My dogs hate them too, so just letting you know. You get a practice chanter too. Oh, about that...rnrnThe practice chanter is...meh. Like most of the cheap practice chanters, it sounds ugly, and gives you a hernia playing it. Buy a good one...please. It's another 75 bucks, but well worth it. If you don't have a tutor, watch youtube vids. You'll spend more time on the practice chanter than on the bag. Practice for AT LEAST an hour every day. Then practice blowing up the bagpipe and keeping the drones going steady for as long as possible. It'll increase your lung strength and capacity. DO that for five minutes daily.rnrnBagpipes are a beautiful instrument, and there's nothing like them. It's an art, a science and an obsession. These pipes are good for a beginner to pick up the hobby and see if they like it. For the price, they're okay. They're also good for an experienced piper who wants a cheap, beater set to hike with, play on a boat, keep in the car for emergency bagpiping situations, or loan to a student. You're not going to play these in a band, get paid gigs at weddings (hopefully), or use them to lead your army to victory, but you'll learn how to play at least. Then you'll get a better set and these will likely go on your wall.rnrnThree stars because they're cheap, the reeds suck, and they leak. But three stars because they're serviceable and fun nonetheless.
