The Presidium Electronic Refractive Index Meter II is a digital reflectometer that reads the refractive index (RI) of gems on a small screen to three decimal places. It can read RI from 1.000 to 3.000 and can connect to a PC to provide possible stones with measured RI. It can be filtered by color, specific gravity (SG), and other parameters. The machine can be used to test round beads as long as the stone has a flat surface. The Presidium Electronic Refractive Index Meter II can be used for raw gems but should not be trusted alone as it is not very accurate. It can be used along with other tests and is pretty handy for a quick test. However, one cannot trust one type of test alone and needs to verify with other methods, such as refractive index. The best method for gemstones under an RI of 1.80 is to get a manual refractometer with the refractive fluid. It is much better than using the Presidium Electronic Refractive Index Meter II. It can distinguish between moissanite and a diamond every time and is an indispensable tool if you are sourcing cut stones. It requires fundamental knowledge of gemstones and their RI.
