I decided to gamble on putting some of my veggies outside in the ground in April even though our last frost is usually mothers day. I put two tomatoes outside and this lightweight tent was a miracle. Two frosts and the plants are completely fine and clearly thriving, clearly getting enough sun and moisture because I have only had to water them once in two weeks, and they are green and beautiful. (I purchased the giant fleece).

I have squirrels and tree rats that attack my potted tomatoes and peppers both day and night! I was about to give up, but thought I'd give these bags a try. I have been very happy so far. The are nice and wide so fit over the tomato pots with cages. There are 3 tall one and 3 shorter ones. So far they have protected the plants from critter attack!

Choosing the right protective barrier for your garden is not a one-size-fits-all decision. On Ubuy, you will find that plant covers are grouped by material and shape to serve targeted functions. For instance, tender seedlings started early in planter nursery pots require delicate hoods to prevent outdoor transplant shock. Meanwhile, cascading flowers in elevated hanging planters need custom-fitted drawstring shields to protect trailing foliage from harsh winds. Whether you need an insulating layer against freezing frost or a micro-mesh shield to block destructive insects, matching the right style to your setup creates a balanced microclimate that fosters healthy growth in every season. The main types available include:

Floating Row Covers

Floating row covers are incredibly versatile sheets made from lightweight spunbond nonwoven polypropylene or polyester. Because they weigh next to nothing, you can drape these plant protector covers directly over your foliage, letting them "float" on top of the leaves or prop them up using flexible wire hoops. As lightweight plant cover nets, they allow crucial sunlight and trailing water to pass through effortlessly while acting as a reliable barrier against invasive insects and unexpected light frost.

Cloches

Cloches are perfect for shielding individual plants or tiny clusters of young seedlings. These handy, bell-shaped protectors are usually made from clear plastic domes or rigid wire cages that you place straight over a solitary plant. Using a clear plastic cover for plants works like a miniature personal greenhouse, trapping warmth while also creating a tough physical barrier that stops curious garden pests like rabbits and squirrels from nibbling your fresh growth. This individualised setup is highly effective when paired with window boxes to safeguard delicate seedlings lining a balcony or porch rail. To keep these lightweight domes from shifting during sudden storms, secure them down firmly using heavy-duty stakes or anchors found in your gardening pots and accessories collection.

Cold Frames

Cold frames are low, box-like structures set right onto your garden soil, typically built with sturdy wooden or metal frames and topped with clear glass or a heavy-duty plastic plant cover. They work by capturing solar energy during the day to keep the Earth warm and cosy. This makes them an exceptional alternative to outdoor planter covers, offering the ultimate setup for hardening off indoor seedlings before transplanting and for keeping cold-tolerant winter vegetables alive through deep chills.

Shade Cloths

Shade cloths are your garden's best defence against the scorching heat of peak summer. Made from durable woven or knitted polyethene, this type of garden shade cover is specifically rated to block a set percentage of intense sunlight, usually between 30% and 50%. By choosing specialised UV-resistant plant covers, you can diffuse burning rays, cool down the immediate microclimate, and prevent heat-sensitive crops from drying out or getting sunburned. Check out what the Redditor has to say about shade cloth.

Shade clothe is a game changer in Colorado. I had a side by side comparison last year with a friend, he had drip irrigation, Mulch, shade clothe: was the most explosive lush veggie garden I’ve ever seen in CO.

Shade clothe also serves as a protection against hail damage as well, which is a big added bonus for us, especially this year I suspect.

Highly recommend shade clothe above delicate, humidity loving, hail loathing vegetables.

Heavy-Duty Frost Blankets (Fleece)

When extreme cold and deep winter freezes threaten your landscaping, winter plant protection covers are the ultimate line of defence. These are thick, heavyweight agricultural fabrics or woven fleece designed to trap as much radiant ground heat as possible around your shrubs and crops. They offer an immediate shield over bare Earth, though some gardeners also like to incorporate living green ground cover plants along their rows to naturally insulate soil roots ahead of winter.

Frequently Asked Questions About Plant Covers

  • What is the best thing to cover plants with?

The ideal choice depends entirely on the specific weather threat. For frost insulation, lightweight horticultural fleece or breathable fabric blankets are best because they trap warmth while allowing moisture to escape. For pest control, mesh netting is optimal, whereas heavy rain or ice snaps may require temporary plastic sheeting over a supporting frame.

  • Can I use plant covers for indoor plants?

Generally, no. These covers are specifically manufactured to withstand harsh outdoor elements like wind, heavy frost, and direct ultraviolet rays. Indoor greenery typically thrives best when left uncovered in a stable room climate with controlled ambient humidity.

  • Are plant covers reusable?

Yes, high-quality models made from UV-stabilised fabrics, woven polypropylene, or heavy plastic are built for multiple seasons. To extend their lifespan, clean off loose dirt, dry them thoroughly to prevent mould, and store them away in a dark space during the off-season.

  • Where can I purchase plant covers online in Finland?

You can easily explore and buy a wide range of premium global brands for garden safety online at Ubuy Finland, where you will find specialised choices for every type of weather protection.
